RIP Joannetta. We love you!
- Chef Joannetta Jarman at past Corks & Chefs
It is with heavy heart that we share the recent passing of our dear friend, Chef Joannetta Jarman. Joannetta has been a taste juggernaut and trailblazer in the Birmingham community for over 30 years through several of her beloved culinary endeavors which include Catering by LaNetta, Cafe 1720, and Cafe LaNetta. We are sad to say goodbye, but feel lucky to have had her in our lives as a longtime supporter, partner, and special culinary feature at Magic City Art Connection.
For many years at MCAC’s Corks & Chefs, it was our distinct pleasure to showcase food created by Joannetta and her husband, Chef Levi Jarman. The authentic African and Caribbean dishes they presented at the tasting event were always a hit and shared unique and diverse cultural flavors and influences with C&C’s foodies. Ku Ku Na Nazi – Kenya Coconut Chicken with steamed rice and flatbread was their featured dish in 2007. And it was delicious!
Joannetta’s food and generous spirit was also felt at MCAC’s annual fundraiser, Art Bash, where she would often donate delicious bites for guests to enjoy as we raised money for the spring non-profit art festival. Joannetta was a person who always said yes, always showed up, and always arrived with a smile on her face.
Her presence, warmth, generous spirit, inspiration, and the love she infused into her food and audience will be sorely missed in the community and at the Festival.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Levi and her family during this difficult time.
