It is our pleasure to announce Magic City Art Connection’s (MCAC) 2024 Featured Artist, Bryce Speed, Associate Professor of Art in Painting at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Each year, MCAC’s Featured Artist is selected from a network of talented artists, including Festival exhibitors, jurors, emerging artists, past award winners, and special exhibition artists.

Bryce’s language of painting is contemporary in form, almost architectural. It communicates familiarity with its use of shapes, line, form, and symbols we know well, while also addressing a duality, connection or blockage in the visual and social conversations that are prompted with the viewer. “Using a collage like sensibility to layout this work, with its fluidity and maneuverability, I seek to represent how both internal and external forces shape relationships between idea and form.”

Our connection to Bryce Speed’s work began in 2017. His painting, “Burn Off”, was one of the pieces showcased in “Artwork by University Art Professors”, an MCAC Special Exhibition that featured work from University of Alabama and Birmingham Southern College art professors. But MCAC’s link to Bryce doesn’t end there. His work has also been a part of the Festival’s Art Bash Benefit party auctions over the years. In 2024, we have taken our association even further and selected one of his paintings for showcase in the design of the 2024 Poster and accompanying marketing campaign. Additionally, we will be exhibiting a small collection of his paintings during the Festival’s 41st annual Featured Artist Exhibition April 26-28 at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.

Read more about Bryce’s work on his Featured Artist page.

AND STAY TUNED! We’ll be unveiling Bryce’s featured artwork and the 2024 poster design Tuesday, February 20.
