Featured Artist & Juror of the 40th MCAC April 28-30, 2023 – DIRK STASCHKE
Magic City Art Connection (MCAC) is celebrating a momentous anniversary in 2023. We’re calling it our FAB 40th! We hope you’ll join us the April 28-30 at Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark as we continue the Festival’s spring arts tradition as a catalyst for the arts in Birmingham and a champion of artists, creativity, and arts enjoyment. Create. Inspire. Educate. Collect.

As we pondered the selection of the 2023 artist to be featured on the Festival Poster, we thought it made perfect sense to reconnect with someone who has been a part of that illustrious history. It is our distinct pleasure to announce that University of Montevallo graduate, ceramicist, and past MCAC exhibitor, Dirk Staschke, will be joining us from Portland, Oregon as the Featured Artist of Magic City Art Connection 40.
“I make sculptures based on paintings in what is traditionally considered a craft medium. In this translation, the sculptural representation of still-life painting creates abstract forms. The results are beautifully made objects that simultaneously expose the crude structures of their creations.” – The Seattle Times, March 15, 2015
Dirk Staschke’s work pictured below, “Fish Platter”, is currently in the permanent collection at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

In addition to showcasing a piece by Dirk on the poster, which will mark the first time that MCAC has featured a ceramic work on its poster, he will also be jurying the 175 artists exhibiting at the show in his dual role as Festival Juror and Featured Artist. MCAC annually gives out around 18 cash awards to its artists. It’s no easy task with all of the talent on display at the Festival, and we’re happy to say he’s up for the challenge.

Later this week, we will be unveiling the 2023 Featured work of art by Dirk, plus the 40th annual poster design.
