I approach the blank canvas by first building an abstract textural base, carving and pressing various objects into acrylic mediums. I work quickly and loosely with the goal of achieving a design that will stand alone as a complete abstract textural composition. My subjects include landscapes, still life, florals, with a focus on contrast of color and texture. I begin my representational rendering with washes of fluid acrylics followed by layers of heavier bodied acrylics applied with brushes and palette knives. In some works I layer fluids and heavy bodied acrylics scraping the surface between layers revealing colors from below the surface. As the layers grow I begin to forget my photos allowing the underlying texture to lead my hand.
